FAQ - Frequently asked questions about real gold jewelry
What is real gold?
Real gold refers to jewelry that contains a legally regulated minimum percentage of pure gold . In Germany, jewelry of 8 carats (333 gold) and above is considered real gold – meaning it contains at least 33.3% pure gold .
The higher the carat value, the higher the fine gold content:
- 18 carat (750) = 75% pure gold → particularly high quality, bright shine, rich gold tone
- 14 carat (585) = 58.3% → more robust & cheaper, but less intense in color
- 8 carats (333) = 33.3% → lower limit, paler & less valuable
💛 At ILIKOEZ we only use 18K real gold (750) – for maximum shine, value and longevity.
What does 18 carat gold (750) mean?
18-karat gold—also called 750 gold —is 75% pure gold . The remaining 25% consists of alloy metals such as silver, copper, or palladium, which provide additional hardness and color nuances.
💛 Advantages of 18K gold:
– High fine gold content → intense, warm gold tone
– Ideal for high-quality jewelry → durable, noble & luxurious
– Hypoallergenic → well tolerated by sensitive skin
✨ At ILIKOEZ, 18K gold stands for real, responsible luxury – fair, sustainable and timelessly beautiful.
What does 750 mean in gold jewelry?
750 means: 750 out of 1,000 parts are made of pure gold—i.e., 75%. It is the common designation for 18-karat real gold.
At what carat does gold no longer qualify as “real gold”?
Gold alloys of 8 carats and above (333 gold) are still considered real gold in many countries because they contain a gold content of at least 33.3% .
In Germany, 8 carats is the legal minimum for the designation “gold”.
In other countries (e.g. Switzerland or the USA) only 10 carats (416) or even 14 carats (585) are often considered to be a serious “real gold” standard – especially in the high-quality jewelry sector.
Conclusion:
✔ 8K = still allowed, but lower standard
✔ 14K (585) = solid mid-range
✔ 18K (750) = high-quality real gold
✘ Below 8K = no longer real gold (e.g. 6K or 5K)
Is 18K better than 14K gold?
Yes – if you value quality, color and material .
18K gold consists of 75% pure gold and has a particularly warm, intense color . It is of higher quality, has a more elegant appearance, and is the standard for true luxury jewelry.
14K gold contains only 58.3% pure gold . It is paler in color, has a lower material value, and is therefore a more cost-effective alternative.
Is 585 gold also real gold?
Yes, 585 gold is also real gold and corresponds to 14 carats, with a fine gold content of 58.3%. In comparison, 18K gold – also known as 750 gold – contains 75% pure gold . It is more intense in color and of higher quality due to its high gold content, making it the preferred choice for fine, long-lasting jewelry – like ILIKOEZ.
How do I properly care for my real gold jewelry?
Real gold doesn't oxidize, but it can lose its shine through contact with chemicals. It's best to remove it when cleaning, exercising, or sleeping, and polish it regularly with a soft cloth.
Why does ILIKOEZ use 750 real gold?
Because quality counts: 18K gold (750) stands for deeper shine, high material value and longevity – perfect for jewelry with meaning.
What is the difference between real gold and gold-plated jewelry?
Real gold is solid gold (e.g., 18K). Gold-plated jewelry has only a thin layer of gold—often over brass or steel—and wears off over time.
Is your gold recycled?
Yes! We use 100% recycled 18K gold from responsible sources – without new mining. This reduces environmental impact and preserves natural resources.
What is the difference between real gold, gold-plated and gold-filled?
Real gold – like our 18K gold – consists of solid gold (75% gold and 25% alloy components) and is particularly durable, valuable and color-intensive.
Gold-plated means: A cheap metal is only thinly coated with gold – it will therefore wear out quickly.
Gold Filled is higher quality than gold plating, but is still just a thicker layer of gold on a base metal – not solid gold.
